TSBT02: Today is a gift, tomorrow is not owed!
Small wins deserve to be celebrated too!
Gather 'round, you magnificent misfits! I got a little bit of sum’n sum’n to share.
Have you ever wondered how we are advised to look and plan for the future but live in the moment? Well whoever coined that knew that if you miss living in the now, moments meant to be celebrated will be missed. Savor the process and fruits with the same energy because they too shall pass.
No matter what industry you are in, you prioritize what needs to be done per day, month, or year. To prioritize, you need to know what tasks are necessary to achieve the overall goal and what tasks are urgent and have to be dealt with immediately. I like this post by Dr Milan, where he explains the concept of the Eisenhower matrix, which is a decision-making tool. This tool can equally be used to make decisions on the tasks that you would like to achieve on a personal level. The matrix is split in four quadrants: urgent and important, non-urgent but important, urgent but not important, and lastly, non-urgent and not important.
Have you ever wanted to speak at an event and missed it because you missed the CFP? Well, my good friend Linda Ikechukwu shared a post on a website that lists conferences and the links to their CFPs. Be sure to check it out, you do not want to miss another CFP.
When building software applications, something you need to focus on other than code is the design and architecture. Here is a thread by Frank Wiles on practical development tips for the software development life cycle to help you get the design and architecture right. I also learned about the napkin plan. The napkin plan means having a rough plan for what to do incase you run into problems to avoid premature optimization.
Here is a URL visualizer from this article that defines URL parts in detail. Parts of the URL are specifically important when dealing with cookies. When handling cookies, you need to understand the difference between site and origin. The origin is a combination of protocol, domain, port and security boundaries, whereas a site encompasses web pages under the control of the same entity.
Here is why knowing the difference between the two is vital when working with cookies:
a. Cookie security: cookies store user-specific information like authentication tokens. Associating cookies with a site rather than a specific origin means that developers can ensure the cookies are accessible across related origins within the same site for a seamless user experience.
b. Cross-site request forgery protection: Associating cookies with a site helps protect against CSRF attacks by ensuring that requests from different origins within the same site are treated as legitimate.
c. User privacy: By using site-specific cookies, developers can provide a cohesive user experience while maintaining the security benefits of the same-origin policy.
I love watching YouTube live streams a lot. You get to experience every activity as it unfolds in near real-time. I always wondered what happened in the background to make the livestream possible. This post offers insights into the background activities for live streams. What I find interesting is the ability to tailor the video quality based on individual device capabilities and network conditions, ensuring a smooth viewing experience for everyone while reducing latency.
Technical writing is a skill that developers can leverage to share knowledge as well as improve their soft skills. This article explains why you should have a blog and how to start one. I liked this article because it not only highlighted the why but also doubts you may have before having your blog, how it can help advance your software engineering career as well as how to write an effective technical blog.
I am still reading The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel. This book has gems all over the place. It is a combination of stories to illustrate the points the author makes about understanding investments and finance, e.g being rich vs being wealthy. A few gems I would love to share with you are:
Getting money requires risks being optimistic and putting yourself out there. But keeping money requires the opposite of taking risk. It requires humility, and fear that what you have made can be taken away from you just as fast. It requires frugality and an acceptance that at least some of what you’ve made is attributable to luck, so past success can’t be relied upon to repeat indefinitely………
Your success as an investor will be determined by how you respond to punctuated moments of terror, not the years spent on cruise control. A good definition of an investing genius is the person who can do the average thing when all those around them are going crazy……
One of the most powerful ways to increase your savings isn’t to raise your income. Its to raise your humility…..
Savings can be created by spending less. You can spend less if you desire less. And you will desire less if you care less about what others think of you.
DjangoCon EU will be happening in Vigo, Spain, in June 5th June to 9th. The CFP is also open as well as early bird tickets are on sale. If you would like to attend or speak head to the link, it has all the information you may need.
DjangoCon US will still be happening in Durham, North Carolina on September 22nd to 27th. I attended my first one last year, you can read about it here.
In other news, I am officially part of the Djangonaut Space as a Djangonaut in the current cohort. I am super excited to be contributing to the Django project and Django Debug Toolbar. I will definitely be sharing some of the things I work on, what I am working on and my experience thus far. Stay tuned.
Word of the day is stupendously, which means very surprising, in a pleasing way. You can use it in a sentence like: the violinist played stupendously.
Remember that today is a gift and tomorrow is not owed but a blessing. Utilise today to the best of your ability.
Go forth beloved, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
