TSBT12: 4-Day Work Week

Joy, goals and hardwork

Gather 'round, you magnificent adults! I hope your mid-term was awesome! And to those who celebrate Easter, I hope you had a good one. I know I did!

I was working on upgrading a website that was behind on its dependencies and desperately needed to be updated. I thought the task would be a quick fix, but it quickly smacked my face that some of the dependencies may be open source libraries that are no longer maintained. The unmaintained libraries made a good detour because now I had to upgrade those to make them easier to use on the website. Another win for open source! Additionally, here is another article that talks about why you should update your version of Python.

By now, you must have heard about the XZ backdoor that was discovered by Andres while benchmarking Postgres changes. To understand the whole gist, check out this reddit post that explains it simply.

It's always a good day to be a Python developer. If you like reading Python code, here are some recommendations that will help you understand Python better.

In fact, the very idea that a single root problem exists may be misleading; problems are typically multicausal and can be addressed in many ways. The elevator issue, for example, could be reframed as a peak demand problem—too many people need the lift at the same time—leading to a solution that focuses on spreading out the demand, such as by staggering people’s lunch breaks.

Problem-solving skills are a required skill in the current job market. Being able to identify and dissect the problem is the first step, and getting a range of solutions is the second. The beauty of problems is that there are always different ways to solve them, depending on what is important. This article by Harvard goes deep into exploring if you are solving the right problems.

The above quote reminds me of the movie Bleed For This, which is based on Vinny Pazienza, who won a middleweight boxing championship. At the very end, Vinny is being interviewed, and one of the questions he is answering is “What is the biggest lie he has ever told?” He says that “it's not that simple." He goes ahead to explain that “they tell you it's not simple because that’s how they get you to give up. When you are doing the thing you want to do, then you will realize that it actually is that simple and it always has been.”

Guidelines and coding styles vary depending on the organizations and maintainers backing the project. This is vital because the code needs to be consistent, manageable, and less complex. Here is an example of what Uber’s style guide looks like.

Just like Andres was benchmarking Postgres, we tend to want to improve the applications we work with whether to improve performance based on time or on memory. This checklist has some best practices to improve Backend performance.

Docker makes it easy to containerize your applications. Here are two ways to stop writing Docker files.

Job interviews and applications are a different kind of torture. As you prepare for transfer season, here is a detailed guide on how to prepare for an interview. Don't forget to also use this gem.

To be good at something, you have to put in 10,000 hours. Here are reflections on 10,000 hours of DevOps.

Just like Andres was benchmarking Postgres, we tend to want to improve the applications we work with, whether to improve performance based on time or memory. This checklist has some best practices to improve backend performance.

The word of the day is prognosticate. Prognosticate means to predict or foreshadow something. Example in a sentence: Dark clouds prognosticate a storm.

This week’s issue is as short as your week beloved!

I'm making my grand departure into the unknown. Until the next issue, my treasured reader, go forth, and may the odds ever be in your favour!
