TSBT09: Food, Shoes and Lanterns

Finish what you start

Hear ye! Hear ye! Gather around, for I bring news both curious and grand!

Change is the only constant. I graduated from Djangonaut Space on Thursday. I had a great time working on the Django Debug Toolbar and authoring the Django updates on Django news. Despite the end of the program, I will still be continuing to author the updates and make contributions to the toolbar because open source is the new sauce.

Last week, I shared lists from Kati and Jeff on what topics they would like to hear about at DjangoCon. This week, we have a new list from Drew. The beauty of all the lists is that you can use them to learn more on the topics or submit them to other conferences as CFPs. If you struggle to research stuff you would like to talk about, here is an assistant that will make your experience slightly better.

My favorite mobile games are Vector and Traffic Rider, all thanks to my awesome brothers. Please do not tell them I said they were awesome. If you love games and open source, this game is a good one to try. It was built using Django, HTMX, and Tailwind.

At the end of the interview, you always get the question, “Do you have any questions for us?” I always have questions about culture and how the managers work to find out if there is micro-managing and any other red or green flags. The point of the questions is to show that you are actually interested in the company. I like this post, which highlights some of the questions to ask.

System design is a skill every developer needs to learn. This list highlights different links that could get you acquainted with system design.

Some days I can be productive, and other days I just become a beautiful potato. I love potatoes a lot, but that’s not the point. Here are four productivity methods to avoid being a potato. In addition, Adora also shares tips on how to create an effective morning routine that sets you up for success.

Redis is common for caching, but do you know why? Find out the inner workings here.

I have not yet finished What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School, and before you write me off, hear me out. I am working on it. Another book I have added to my to-read list is The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, partly because I am a creative person and it's supposed to help with creativity. Here is a list of books recommended for professionals.

If you dream of retiring early to a ranch with horses or traveling around the world, you can use this calculator to know what amount of money you would need to retire and start planning ahead.

Some words that a good friend of mine shared eons ago that I would like to pass on to you are: I hope you learn to tie your own shoes (step up); I pray your days are like floating lanterns (happy); I hope you learn to finish your food (finish what you start); and to appreciate that progress is always progress, no matter how slow.

The word of the day is colossal. Colossal means extremely large. Example in a sentence: The food bill was colossal.

I'm making my grand departure into the unknown. Until the next issue, my beloved reader, go forth, and may the odds ever be in your favor!
