TSBT05: Giggles and Gumdrops

Bold Adventures

Hear ye! Hear ye! Gather around, for I bring news both curious and grand!

Last week, I authored Django Updates on the Django News issue, thanks to Sarah Boyce and the Djangonaut Space. Hopefully, this is one of my many contributions to the newsletter. Subscribe to Django News today if you haven’t.

FOSDEM is an event organized to promote free and open-source software. It's usually in Brussels, Belgium. One of the talks I liked was So You Think You Know Git by Scott Chacon. The talk is a simple but comprehensive approach to the concepts of Git. Scott goes through what is common, like Git Blame, while still introducing what's new, like a way to force push safely. Additionally, here is a more detailed blog post about the talk.

GitOps is an operational framework that takes DevOps best practices used for application development such as version control, collaboration, compliance, and CI/CD, and applies them to infrastructure automation.

Companies and open source projects are moving to GitOps due to the following reasons:

  • Stability and reliability: reduced errors, predictability, and easy rollbacks.

  • Collaboration and productivity: consistency across environments, aligned teams, clear approvals, and faster deployments.

  • Security and Governance: Fewer vulnerabilities, clear audit trails, enforced compliance.

  • Development and Deployment: speedier releases, easy experimentation, minimal overhead.

  • Scalability and Flexibility: Works anywhere, scales effortlessly, and integrates seamlessly.

Despite the changes, there is still active adoption of Jenkins as a CI/CD tool. This article goes through what to choose between Jenkins and Jenkins X.

Some propitious omens: I found this really cool tool that summarizes manual pages with examples, TLDR. For Django developers, Kolo allows you to see what is going on with your Django application, which makes debugging a little bit easier. Postgraduate applications are open, and this resource gives you some of the points to include in your personal statement. For SQL fans who are rusty or just need a place to learn SQL, I would recommend going through this.

Docker is an OS platform that simplifies the process by packaging applications into containers. This cheatsheet simplifies what you need to know when carrying out common tasks on Docker.

Kubernetes is an OS platform that manages and oversees your containerized applications for smooth operation. This learning path highlights what you need to know to become a Kubernetes expert. These interview questions can serve as a guiding light for what needs to be at your fingertips.

System design interviews can be a daunting task. This list of articles provides you with a list of things to know before the interview.

Dependency management is essential to creating robust, reproducible, and efficient applications. This article specifically goes through dependency management in Python.

The word of the day is unilaterally. Unilaterally means undertaken by one person, party, or group, one side action or decision. Example in a sentence: The Queen unilaterally declared a peace offering despite warnings from her advisors.

I'm making my grand departure into the unknown. Until the next issue, my beloved reader, go forth, and may the odds ever be in your favour!
